Nearly two years after the Defence ministry wrote to the CBI seeking investigation into a recruitment scandal, the agency has finally launched a preliminary enquiry. The Department of Defence Production (DDP) vide letter on August 10, 2018, informed the CBI that the department’s vigilance cell had found “serious irregularities” in the appointment of six lower division clerks in 2016 by the then recruitment board in Kanpur. The ministry told the agency the said irregularities are “criminal in nature”.

As per news report of Economic Times, the letter, a copy of which ET has seen, also said the Defence minister has directed that the matter be probed by the CBI. “You are, therefore, requested to investigate the matter immediately and take further necessary action. The findings of the investigation may be shared with this ministry for further action,” read the letter written by Chanan Ram Saini, the then deputy secretary (vigilance cell, DDP).
