The aim is to effectively represent digital news media organisations and membership is open to digital-only ventures, as well as media commentators and independent journalists active in the digital news space. DIGIPUB membership is limited to digital news outlets, independent and freelance journalists currently operating in India. In India, television news channels and newspapers have self-regulators, the News Broadcasting Association and the Press Council of India, respectively. But there was no such body representing digital-only media organisations, and DIGIPUB seeks to fill this vacuum. “One of the aims of the Foundation is to underline the fact that the pursuits and interests of legacy media may not always be the same as that of digital media – especially in regards to regulation, business models, technology and structures,” a press release of the association stated.
