India reported 16,000 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, its highest daily increase since the outbreak began, and the government called in the army to manage new treatment centres with thousands of additional hospital beds in New Delhi.

A bailey bridge in this district of Uttarakhand, nearly 50 km from the Sino-India border, collapsed when a truck carrying a JCB machine was crossing it, an official said on Tuesday. Police on Tuesday claimed that a youth from Srinagar, who went missing during a trekking expedition in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, has joined the militant ranks. "Yes. The Delhi government has said it is in the process of procuring oxygen cylinders and concentrators and directed hospitals under it to not procure them for COVID-19 patients, according to an official order. As per news report of PTI, the government had earlier this month directed medical directors of all the designated COVID hospitals under the Delhi government to arrange oxygen supply for all hospital beds.

Diesel price on Sunday hit a fresh record high after rates were hiked by 60 paise per litre while petrol price was up 35 paise, taking the cumulative increase in rates in 15 days to Rs 8.88 a litre and Rs 7.97 respectively. Petrol price in Delhi was hiked to Rs 79.23 per litre from Rs 78.88, while diesel rates were increased to Rs 78.27 a litre from Rs 77.67, according to a price notification of state oil marketing companies.

The Centre has asked states to ensure implementation of its guidelines on home isolation at the field level "in letter and spirit" to effectively contain the spread of the coronavirus, after taking note of instances of laxity. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare issued revised guidelines for home isolation on May 10 which continue to be effective as on date, an official statement said Friday. According to the guidelines, very mild and pre-symptomatic COVID-19 patients can opt for home isolation, provided the patient has a room for himself/herself with toilet facility and has an adult attendant or caregiver.

More than four kg of brown sugar worth Rs 4.5 crore was seized here and three people were arrested, police said on Saturday. Director General of Police Abhay said that acting on a tip-off, Odisha Police Special Task Force personnel raided a place in Rasulgarh area, and seized 4.5 kg of brown sugar and arrested three people on Friday night. "This is the biggest ever seizure of brown sugar by any agency of the Odisha Police," he said.
